The 2016 Detroit Auto Show kicked off with press days occurring January 11th and 12th, and was followed by trade days on January 13th and 14th, and a public show that runs through January 24th of 2016.

2016 NAIAS Floor Plan

Debuts:

Buick Envision

Buick Envision: Buick's latest crossover, the Envision, will ride on the Delta 2 platform - the Envision will be larger than the Encore, but smaller than the Enclave. This will be the first Buick built in China and sold in the United States. The Envision takes on styling cues from both of it's crossover stablemates - Buick's trademark waterfall grille sits between all LED lighting elements similar to those on the new Buick Cascada Convertible. A wrap-around dashboard places an infotainment display and analog clock up high, above the HVAC vents, and wood trim contrasts with leather surfaces on the door panels and on the floor console with damped dual wing doors to allow easier access by either the driver or passenger. The Envision will make 252 horsepower from a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine, matched with a six-speed automatic transmission. This power will be channeled through GM's HiperStrut front suspension to minimize torque steer. Active grille shutters help boost fuel efficiency at highway speeds, and the Envision will also offer park assist. Other available features include OnStar with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, four USB ports, four 12V power outlets, and a 120V AC outlet. Interacting with Buick's Intellilink system is made easier by way of a new steering wheel with thumb-operated toggle switches.

Chevrolet Bolt

Chevrolet Bolt: At the 2016 NAIAS, Chevrolet's Bolt compact electric crossover debuted touting a 200 mile electric range. The Chevrolet Bolt is about the size of the Sonic, with a length that slots in between the Sonic 5-Door Hatch and 4-Door Sedan models. A neat feature can be seen in the LED taillights that are integrated into the rear hatch - this allows for a larger opening into the cargo area, and the designers have included lights in the rear bumper that will function as taillights in the event that the Bolt is used to transport items large enough to require driving with the cargo hatch open (as the normal taillamps will be facing the sky). The Bolt's dashboard is highlighted by a standard 10.2 inch touchscreen display, with central HVAC vents above and HVAC controls below. The center IP does not flow into the floor console area, instead receding underneath to make room for a storage space and charging ports. The instrument cluster is also a digital display screen, this one an eight inch unit. The Bolt is powered by a 200 horsepower electric motor drawing from a 60 kWh lithium-ion battery pack in the floor - this battery pack weighs in at just over 960 pounds, and contains 288 individual cells. This powertrain setup will allow the Bolt to travel 200 miles on a full charge, which takes nine hours with Level 2 charging attributed to an onboard 7.2 kW charger - in addition, there will be an SAE Combo DC fast charging option. When less charge time is available, the Bolt will be able to net 50 miles of range from under two hours of Level 2 charging. Chevrolet has stated that the Bolt's battery will have an 8 year / 100,000 mile warranty. A braking 'Regen on Demand' feature will be available via a steering wheel mounted paddle, as in the Volt - this allows the driver to regain some electrical charge, and slow the vehicle without needing to apply the brakes as often. After receiving feedback from Chevy Volt owners, GM is enabling the Bolt to use driving history info, weather forecasting, terrain details, and time of day in order to manage - and more accurately predict - range.

Honda Ridgeline

Honda Ridgeline: Honda debuted a new generation of their unibody crew cab pickup truck - the Ridgeline - at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. The Ridgeline is intended to compete with the volume-selling configurations (crew cab, short bed) of the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma. The Ridgeline shares many design elements with the redesigned for 2016 Honda Pilot on which it is based, including the headlamp shapes, hood strakes, the accent line down the side that bisects the door handles, and the side-view mirrors. It stands apart from the Pilot with a blockier front bumper design, more chrome adorning the headlights and grille, and out back where the pickup bed necessitates straighter lines and upright taillamps. The front row of the Ridgeline is identical to the 2016 Pilot, with the exception of the conventional shifter - the Pilot moved to an electronic shifter and 9-speed automatic transmission for the new generation. The second row has a slightly different seat layout than the Pilot, and features 60/40 split lower seat cushions that can fold upward to offer more interior cargo space (this design appears identical to the first generation Ridgeline models). This new Ridgeline is going to be powered by a 3.5L V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, and will be available in either front- or all-wheel drive. The i-VTM4 Torque Vectoring AWD configuration taken from the new Pilot also gives the Ridgeline a maximum trailer weight of 5,000 pounds, with a maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds. The Ridgeline is not available in multiple cab styles or bed lengths, so Honda has engineered the Ridgeline with the largest bed (60" x 64") among crew cab short bed competitors, and has also kept previous innovations like the large lockable under-bed storage area that also houses the spare tire, a jack, and a drain plug to allow for easy cleaning, and a dual-action tailgate that can open traditionally, or swing outward from the passenger side. In addition, an easily accessible panel in the rear wall of the bed offers another small storage area as well as an AC outlet that can handle 400W (w/engine running in park), and an exclusive six speaker in-bed 540W sound system, all hidden behind the integrated bedliner.

Redesigns:

Chrysler Pacifica

Chrysler Pacifica/Pacifica Hybrid: At the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler debuted a redesigned minivan inspired by the 700C concept from 2012 and christened it the Pacifica, bringing back a nameplate last used on a smaller crossover. The new minivan replaces the Town and Country in Chrysler's lineup, and rides on an all-new platform (saving 300 pounds versus the T&C). The design language from the Chrysler 200 is clearly visible in the new Pacifica with very similar headlights flowing into a central grille opening framed with chrome, a design element mimicked lower down on the bumper as well. Other distinct design features can be seen in the sliding door track cutlines - hidden above the chrome trimming the window openings - and in the wraparound rear glass that also incorporates the taillight shapes. The Pacifica has a utilitarian layout, with several storage compartments residing under the uConnect display/climate control/shifter dial area, and revised seats that allow for more passenger room, easier operation of the Stow 'N Go captains chairs that fold into the floor, and a power operated third row. The rear entertainment system has been redone, moving from the roof to the back of the driver and passenger seats - customer feedback indicated the roof mounted units impeded rearward visibility. These new infotainment screens can display independent content, each one being equipped with USB and HDMI ports - content can also be displayed directly from a mobile device via in-vehicle WiFi. A 3.6L Pentastar V-6 (soon to include stop-start tech) finds it's way under the Pacifica's hood, making 287 hp and 262 lb ft of torque, matched up to a nine-speed automatic transmission that is operated by a rotary dial on the center stack. The Pacifica also marks the first instance of a plug-in hybrid minivan as well, using a 16 kWh battery to power two transaxle-mounted electric motors (a CVT developed in-house for this purpose takes the place of the 9-speed auto). This configuration will provide up to 30 miles of all-electric travel, and a fuel economy rating of 80 MPGe. Charging this battery can be accomplished in two hours via a 240V charger, and Hybrid models will also lose the Stow 'N Go seating configuration, as this space will be occupied by the battery. Advanced features like active noise cancellation, forward collision warning, a 360-degree view camera system, and blind spot warning w/rear cross traffic alert are available, as are the keyless sliding doors and liftgate that can be operated by waving your foot near a sensor while the keys are in your pocket. The Pacifica is also going to offer a new dual-row panoramic sunroof that also has a separate 3rd row sunroof.

GMC Acadia

GMC Acadia: GMC unveiled a redesigned, smaller, lighter Acadia crossover in 5- and 7-passenger variants. The outgoing Acadia was 7.2 inches longer, 3.5 inches wider, and 3.9 inches taller than this new design, with a wheelbase that was 6.4 inches longer - the smaller size of the new model (along with the use of press-hardened, high-strength steel) subtracts as much as 700 pounds versus the old model. Style-wise the Acadia is much more modern than before, with sculpted head- and tail-lights, chrome trim accenting the bumper details, and no more grey body cladding at the rocker panels. Inside the Acadia loses some space due to the smaller dimensions, so an 8-passenger version is no longer available, but the seating positions and ease of folding these seats has improved, and cargo space is actually up by 9 cu ft. The new Acadia is going to offer a 2.5L I-4 engine with 194 hp, as well as a new 3.6L V-6 engine that may make up to 310 hp. The smaller 2.5L engine will offer stop-start tech, while the V-6 will improve fuel economy through Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. All engines will be paired with six-speed automatic transmissions, whether outfitted with front-wheel drive, or GMC's overhauled all-wheel drive with an 'Active Twin Clutch' system that controls torque output to either side of the rear axle. Also aiding fuel economy is an all-wheel drive disconnect system that decouples the rear axle when traction is not an issue. The new Acadia will be available in SLT and Denali trims, and also in a new All Terrain trim at the top of the lineup. Lesser models will incorporate a low-speed emergency braking system, while emergency-braking that operates at all speeds will come on Denali and All Terrain models. New Acadia safety features also include pedestrian detection, following-distance indication, automatic high-beam controls, a 360-degree view camera, and a rear seat alert system to remind the driver that a child or package is occupying one of the rear seats - these features join blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision alert, which had already been offered on the Acadia lineup.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan/Plug-In Hybrid: Debuting at the 2016 NAIAS, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan has been redesigned to match the latest Mercedes styling, and also launches new safety and tech features. Also debuting is a plug-in hybrid E350e model. The E-Class design is evolutionary, headlamps and taillamps are more organically shaped, and smaller than before. The roofline is curvier than the W212 generation E-Class, as are the side-view mirrors. Inside, the E-Class sees more radical changes - the separate instrument cluster shape is gone, in it's place is a wide display screen housing cluster functions (analog gauges on lower models, and full digital displays on the upper trims) and the central infotainment screen for the driver and passenger. New round HVAC vents accent either wood grain or carbon-fiber-look trim that spans the width of the dashboard, and the floor console rises to meet the center IP to provide a spot for the latest COMAND controller, an analog clock, and toggle switches for HVAC functions. In the US, the E-Class will launch with a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine making 241 hp and 273 lb ft of torque and a 9-speed automatic transmission. The US will also see a a plug-in hybrid version, the E350e, which uses this same 2.0L turbo I-4 along with an electric motor to improve fuel efficiency. Later on we also expect to see E400 and Mercedes-AMG E63 trims come to market. Standard safety features will include Active Brake Assist with pedestrian detection, Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity, and Crosswind Assist to help mitigate the effects of crosswinds. Optional safety features will include the Driver Assistance Package Plus made up of the Drive Pilot/Distance Pilot/Steering Pilot automated cruise control functions, Active Lane-change Assist, an Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Active Blind Spot Assist. Convenience features include a new Remote Parking Pilot system that allows the vehicle to be moved into and out of garages or parking spaces using a smartphone app, without the driver being in the vehicle, and Car-to-X communication systems that allow the E-Class to share information with other vehicles on the road to avoid problem areas or obstacles. Mercedes also added dual thumb controls on the steering that control the gauge cluster and the central infotainment screen without the driver's hands leaving the wheel.

Concepts:

Acura Precision Concept

Acura Precision Concept: Acura displayed a concept at the 2016 NAIAS that served as a preview of the brand's newest styling direction. The Precision Concept features creased lines that makeup a new 'Diamond Pentagon' grille shape, more aggressive styling, slim three-dimensional lighting elements, and a sports car stance in a long four-door fastback. Inside the Precision Concept there are cream and brown tones - the driver faces a racing style steering wheel with a rectangular display screen for an instrument cluster. A large curved screen sits top center in the dashboard and the floor console merges with the center stack in geometric shapes that house a push-button shifter. The rear has room for two more passengers - the seats seem to float as they are only supported on the sides - these middle supports serve as a rear console area.

Buick Avista Concept

Buick Avista Concept: At the 2016 NAIAS, Buick unveiled a four seat sports coupe concept based on GM's Alpha platform. The tri-shield grille and overall styling mimic the Avenir Concept seen last year, but in a sportier package. A lack of B-pillar provides a sleek look to the coupe, which rides on a wheelbase identical to the Camaro's (110.7 inches) and has a 63 inch front track, and a 62.9 inch rear track. Sleek curves and a simple layout are presented in gray leather while a twin turbocharged V-6 engine is said to provide over 400 horsepower in this rear-wheel drive package.

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept

Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept: An offroad themed concept version of the next generation Volkswagen Tiguan debuted at the 2016 NAIAS with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The GTE Active Concept gets a sporty additions such as a high-strength roof rack, skid plates, tow hooks, and an additional 2 inches of clearance. The interior continues with off-road styling, dark aluminum trim, dark chrome steering wheel accents, and two-tone leather seating materials. The Tiguan GTE Active Concept is equipped with a turbocharged and direct-injection TSI gasoline engine that produces 148 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, mated to two electric motors. These make 54 hp at the front wheels and 114 hp at the rear. The GTE Active Concept receives a new infotainment system with a 9.2-inch display which can be operated by gesture control. Available safety features include Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking and pedestrian monitoring, Lane Assist, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, and a head-up display.
