2016 Beijing Auto Show: Vehicle Coverage
Tuesday, 19 April 2016 01:00

The press days for the 2016 Beijing Auto Show occurred on April 25th and 26th, followed by a public show that ran through May 4th of 2016.

Coverage below provided by Alex Brar, Eric Woodward, Ruby Brallier, and a team of local photographers - May 2016.

"The 14th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2016) will take place at China International Exhibition Center New Venue (Tianzhu) and China International Exhibition Center Old Venue (Jinganzhuang) simultaneously from April 25 to May 4, 2016, the total exhibition area is expected to be 220,000 square meters." - the Auto China 2016 website.

About the Show

Beijing is becoming a larger player in the global automotive circuit, and is starting to present itself like the large European and US shows.

Below you can see an image of the floor on the 2nd media day, looking relatively calm. This made the gentlemen holding a yellow sign reading "keeping moving please" seem out of place until you realize how crowds ten times this size will pack the floor once the show opens to the public.

Nissan Hall

For perspective, here is the floor plan. Beijing's exhibition has eight halls where various OEMs can display their vehicles. The Nissan booth pictured above is located in W201 which occupies a fifth of just one of these eight halls.

Floor Plan

Even though the show floor looked calm, all new vehicles - like this BMW X1 LWB - saw lots of interest from both local and foreign journalists.

Our team members were working right in the middle of these local crowds to bring you as many detailed images as possible.

2017 BMW X1 LWB

In recent years, the Beijing and Shanghai auto shows are starting to be more and more competitive with the other major global auto shows.

To compete on the world stage, some of the Beijing displays are starting to mimic the appearance of displays at the other global shows. For instance, this Zotye display uses white honeycomb-shapes similar to Lincoln displays that use a mesh design made from Lincoln logos:

Here is what Lincoln's display looks like in comparison:

Here are a few of the 2016 Beijing Auto Show highlights with some details about each vehicle:

Debuts:

2017 Acura CDX

2017 Acura CDX: The Acura CDX is a new subcompact crossover for the Chinese market based on the Honda HR-V architecture, expected to go on sale this summer.

The CDX blends elements like the grille shape and lighting elements found on the Acura Precision Concept and the redesigned MDX with the compact footprint of the Honda HR-V.

The CDX is expected to use a turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine that is also in use on the new Civic line, and the transmission is an eight speed unit also in use on the ILX and TLX. Acura will market front- and all-wheel-drive models of the new CDX.

2017 Mazda CX-4

2017 Mazda CX-4: The Mazda CX-4 is a new sporty compact crossover intended primarliy for the Chinese market - it rides on the same platform as the CX-5 models, sharing wheelbase and overall width dimensions.

The CX-4 is longer and much lower in height than the CX-5, with sporty styling and a coupe-like roofline - it compares to the CX-5 the way BMW offers the X3 and X4 models.

The interior styling is again similar to other Mazda models - the central display screen emerging from atop the dash, and central circular gauge surrounded by ancillary displays in the instrument cluster evoke the smaller CX-3. Silver accents adorn the center IP area, and door panels, and a two tone interior in cream and black was shown.

Mazda's 2.0L and 2.5L Skyactiv-G engines will be used, combined with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, and front- or all-wheel drive.

Redesigns / Refreshes:

2017 Lexis IS Sedan

2017 Lexus IS Sedan: The Lexus IS has been refreshed for 2017, and the Beijing show saw it's introduction. The changes include more aggressive styling, retooled lighting designs, a new hood, and a new rear diffuser.

The IS headlamps are smaller, and the hood has new lines that create a brow area over them. These lights sit above larger outer air vents than before, and the checkmark shaped 'light guides' have been sharpened, and have LED DRLs built in. The side profile looks similar to the previous iteration, but the accent lines have been deepened to match the updated styling. Out back the IS sees a new diffuser and tailpipe design, and has taillights with less clear areas - the reverse lamps also have a thinner, more modern shape.

The center console has a new armrest area behind the infotainment controls, and the steering wheel has redesigned switchgear. The central infotainment display is now a 10.3 inch unit (instead of 7.0), and the instrument cluster has a light redesign.

The IS200t uses the base 2.0L twin-scroll turbo I-4 making 241 hp, the mid-range IS300 uses a 3.5L V-6 with 255 hp, and the top of the range IS350 makes 306 hp (also from a 3.5L V-6). The base- and mid-level IS sedans use a 6-speed automatic transmission, as does the all-wheel drive IS350, but the rear-wheel drive IS350 uses an 8-speed automatic.

Concepts:

LeEco LeSee Concept

LeEco LeSee Concept: LeEco (formerly LeTV) introduced a new electric luxury sedan - analogous to a Tesla Model S for the Chinese market. The LeSee Concept features autonomous driving technologies, and connectivity features intended to illustrate the changing entertainment dynamics that autonomous connected vehicles will likely bring.

The LeEco LeSee concept is a sleek sedan with rounded shapes and no traditional front end grille. The grille area instead has an inset design banded by lighting elements, an approach also taken by Volkswagen with their XL1 electric car. From the side, the LeSee is a long fastback shape with cameras mounted below the A-pillar base to serve as rear-view mirrors. The panoramic glass roof is topped with sensors that allow the vehicles to scan the surrounding area, and the same shape seen up front is mimicked in the rear bumper, with a full width band of LED taillamps.

Normal opening front doors and rear-hinged back doors provide access to the interior without needing a B-pillar. Two sculpted bucket seats up front are bisected by a console tunnel that also serves the rear passengers. The rear seat shapes look as if they are carved from multiple layers, giving them a stepped appearance, and these same layers wrap around into the door panels. The miminalistic dashboard has an oblong steering wheel with inset controls, and an organic touschreen display flows from the right hand side of the wheel surround. There is a secondary screen below, rising from the front of the center console.

While said to use an all-electric powertrain, no details were given as far as power, range, or battery size. LeEco has an alternative view on how cars should be marketed, sold, and used. Their idea is to offer vehicles the way cell phones are marketed - free of charge up front in order to profit through connected services and apps.
