Floor Plan

2017 Los Angeles Auto Show Floor Plan

Here are a few of the auto show highlights, with some details about each vehicle:

Debuts:

2018 Nissan Kicks

2018 Nissan Kicks: Initially introduced in the South American market, the Kicks is a sub-compact crossover that may replace the Juke in Nissan's US lineup - conflicting reports mean the Juke may continue to be sold alongside the Kicks or the Juke may become a Europe-only model.

The Kicks is a full 6.7" longer than the Juke and clocks in just a couple inches shorter than the Rogue Sport. In the interest of fuel economy (and base price) the Kicks will forego the turbo I-4 from the Juke and use a naturally aspirated 1.6L I-4 paired with a CVT and front-wheel-drive. This combination yields 125 hp and 115 lb ft of torque.

Standard fare includes a backup camera, automated emergency braking, Bluetooth, and three USB ports, while the SV trim will bring blind-spot monitoring, 17-inch wheels, automatic climate control, and remote start. At the top of the lineup is the SR trim, which includes a 360-degree camera system and some exterior changes (LED accent lights, chrome grille trim, fog lights, and body-color bumper inserts).

Redesigns / Refreshes:

2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited

2018 Jeep Wrangler JL: Jeep redesigned the iconic Wrangler - this latest generation is referred to as the 'JL' - increasing comfort and fuel efficiency while also tailoring the changes towards the Wrangler's offroad roots.

Powertrains are a mix of carryover (3.6L V-6) and new - a 2.0L turbo I-4 mild hybrid is added, a turbodiesel is coming to the Unlimited bodystyle, and a plug-in hybrid version was announced for 2020.

Structural changes were made in the name of aerodynamics and efficiency - aluminum doors and a tailgate with an aluminum outer skin and magnesium inner help the new model drop about 200 pounds.

2018 Mazda6 Sedan

2018 Mazda6 Sedan: Mazda revised the front and rear end of the Mazda6 sedan, simplified the interior design while increasing the infotainment display size and adding a heads-up display, and debuted the turbocharged four-cylinder engine that first saw duty in the CX-9 crossover.

The styling now mimics that seen on the CX-5 crossover and has elements of the Vision Coupe Concept. Also new is the top of the line Signature trim that includes the turbo motor, adds premium brown leather seats, and Japanese Sen wood trim details.

The existing Skyactiv naturally aspirated 2.5L I-4 gains cylinder deactivation, but the biggest news is the turbocharged 2.5L I-4 that makes 250 hp (on 93 octane - 227 hp on regular fuel) and 310 lb ft of torque. The base engine can be had with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, but the turbo engine can only be had with the six-speed automatic.

Concepts:

Toyota FT-AC Concept

Toyota FT-AC Concept: The Future Toyota Adventure Concept - or FT-AC - previews an offroad SUV which would compete with the Jeep Wrangler. Although Toyota calls it a concept vehicle, it will likely go into production.

The FT-AC receives rugged styling inspired by Toyota's current truck line, as well as the usual list of offroad features including skid plates, generous ground clearance, and large 20-inch wheels fitted with all-terrain tires.

Unique features include removable infrared cameras on the side mirrors that can record trail runs, as well as an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot that automatically uploads video to the cloud and allows live-streaming. The FT-AC also features a Safari-style cargo roof rack system, and removable fog lights that double as portable flashlights. Toyota has teased a "next-generation hybrid drivetrain that blends efficiency with rugged all-wheel-drive grunt."
