Electromechanical parking brake

Operating the parking brake: The electromechanical parking brake is used to secure the vehicle from rolling away unintentionally. The PARK/P switch is located under the selector lever in the center console. It turns on when the parking brake is set. You can release the parking brake manually or automatically when you start to drive.

Setting and releasing the parking brake

Setting: pull the switch. If PARK/P appears, the parking brake is holding the vehicle. You can remove your foot from the brake pedal.

Releasing: when the ignition is switched on, press and hold the brake pedal and press the button. If the red indicator light flashes, the braking force has not built up enough or it has decreased. You can also secure the vehicle by selecting the “P” gear or pressing the brake pedal. Make sure the indicator light is off before you start driving.

Automatically releasing the parking brake when starting to drive: Requirement: the driver's door must be closed and the driver’s safety belt must be fastened. Press the accelerator pedal to start to drive.

Parking brake

Setting: Pull the switch. The LED on the switch and the indicator light in the instrument cluster are illuminated.

Releasing: With drive-ready state switched on: Press the switch while stepping on the brake pedal or selector lever position P is set. The LED and indicator light go out. The parking brake is released.

Parking: The parking brake is automatically set if the vehicle is being held by Automatic Hold and the drive-ready state is switched off or the vehicle is exited.

Electric Parking Brake: The Electric Parking Brake (EPB) can always be applied, even if the vehicle is off. In case of insufficient electrical power, the EPB cannot be applied or released. To prevent draining the battery, avoid unnecessary repeated cycles of the EPB. The system has a red parking brake status light and an amber service parking brake warning light. Before leaving the vehicle, check the red parking brake status light to ensure that the parking brake is applied.

EPB Apply: To apply the EPB:

  1. Be sure the vehicle is at a complete stop.
  2. Press the EPB switch momentarily.

The red parking brake status light will flash and then stay on once the EPB is fully applied

EPB Release: To release the EPB:

  1. Turn the ignition on or to ACC/ACCESSORY.
  2. Apply and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Press the EPB switch momentarily.

The EPB is released when the red parking brake status light is off.

Automatic EPB Release: The EPB will automatically release if the vehicle is running, placed into gear, and an attempt is made to drive away. Avoid rapid acceleration when the EPB is applied, to preserve parking brake lining life.

ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE: Your vehicle has an electric parking brake. You operate it with a switch instead of a lever. The switch is on the center console or to the left-hand side of the steering wheel, on the lower part of the instrument panel.

Applying the Electric Parking Brake: Pull the switch upward. The red warning lamp flashes during operation and illuminates when the parking brake is applied.

Applying the Electric Parking Brake in an Emergency: You can use the electric parking brake to slow or stop your vehicle in an emergency. Pull the switch upward and hold it. The red warning lamp illuminates, a tone sounds and the stop lamps turn on. The electric parking brake continues to slow your vehicle down unless you release the switch

Manually Releasing the Electric Parking Brake: Switch the ignition on. Press and hold the brake pedal. Push the switch downward. The red warning lamp turns off.

Automatically Releasing the Electric Parking Brake: Close the driver door. Shift into gear. Press the accelerator pedal and pull away in a normal manner. The red warning lamp turns off.

Electric Parking Brake Switch: Use the parking brake to keep the vehicle stationary when parked. When the parking brake is applied, you can manually or automatically release it.

To apply: The electric parking brake can be applied any time the vehicle has battery, no matter which position the power mode is in.

  1. Pull the electric parking brake switch up gently and securely.
  • The indicator in the switch comes on.
  • The parking brake and brake system indicator (red) comes on.

To release: The power mode must be in ON in order to release the electric parking brake.

  1. Depress the brake pedal.
  2. Press the electric parking brake switch.
  • The indicator in the switch goes off.
  • The parking brake and brake system indicator (red) goes off.

Automatic parking brake feature operation: If the automatic parking brake feature has been activated:

  • The parking brake is applied automatically when you set the power mode to VEHICLE OFF.
  • To confirm that the parking brake is applied, check if the parking brake and brake system indicator (red) is on.

To release automatically: Depressing the accelerator pedal releases the parking brake. Use the accelerator pedal to release the brake when you are starting the vehicle facing uphill, or in a traffic jam. Gently depress the accelerator pedal. When on a hill, it may require more accelerator input to release.

  • The parking brake and brake system indicator (red) goes off.

You can release the parking brake automatically when:

  • You are wearing the driver’s seat belt.
  • The engine is running.
  • The transmission is not in P or N.

Mazda CX-9 21

Electric Parking Brake (EPB): The EPB equipment applies the parking brake using an electric motor. When the parking brake is applied, the EPB switch indicator light turns on.

When applying the parking brake: The parking brake can be applied regardless of the ignition switch position. Securely depress the brake pedal and pull up the EPB switch. The parking brake is applied and the brake system warning light and the EPB switch indicator light turn on.

When releasing the parking brake: The parking brake can be released while the ignition is switched ON or the engine is running. When the parking brake is released, the brake system warning light and the EPB switch indicator light turn off.

Parking brake manual release: Firmly depress the brake pedal and press the EPB switch. If the EPB switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, the display in the instrument cluster notifies the driver that the brake is not depressed.

Parking brake automatic release: If the accelerator pedal is depressed with the parking brake applied and all of the following conditions met, the parking brake is released automatically:

  • The engine is running.
  • The driver's door is closed.
  • The driver's seat belt is fastened.
  • Selector lever is in the D, M, or R position

Electric parking brake function (applying automatically): The electric parking brake is applied if the transmission is in position P and one of the following conditions is fulfilled:

  • The engine is switched off.
  • The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the seat belt buckle of the driver's seat and the driver's door is opened.

Note: To prevent application: pull the handle of the electric parking brake.

In the following situations, the electric parking brake is also applied:

  • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is bringing the vehicle to a standstill.
  • The HOLD function is keeping the vehicle stationary.
  • Active Parking Assist is keeping the vehicle stationary.

This is the case if one of the following conditions is also fulfilled:

  • The engine is switched off.
  • The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the seat belt buckle of the driver's seat and the driver's door is opened.
  • There is a system malfunction.
  • The power supply is insufficient.
  • The vehicle is stationary for a lengthy period.

When the electric parking brake is applied, the red PARK (USA) or P! (Canada) indicator lamp appears in the instrument cluster. The electric parking brake is not automatically applied if the engine is switched off by the ECO start/stop function.

Electric parking brake function (releasing automatically): The electric parking brake is released when the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The driver's door is closed.
  • The engine is running.
  • The transmission is in position D or R and you depress the accelerator pedal or you shift from transmission position P to D or R when on level ground with the driver's door closed.
  • If the transmission is in position R, the trunk lid must be closed.
  • The seat belt tongue is inserted into the seat belt buckle of the driver's seat.

If the seat belt tongue is not inserted into the seat belt buckle of the driver's seat, the following conditions must be fulfilled:

  • You shift from transmission position P.
  • You have previously driven at speeds greater than 2 mph (3 km/h).

When the electric parking brake is released, the red PARK (USA) or P! (Canada) indicator lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.

Electric parking brake

Automatic Mode: The parking brake is set or released automatically according to the shift lever operation.

Even when in automatic mode, the parking brake can be set and released manually.

Turn automatic mode on: while the vehicle is stopped, pull and hold the parking brake switch until a message is shown on the multi-information display.

  • When the shift lever is moved out of P, the parking brake will be released, and the parking brake indicator light and parking brake light turn off.
  • When the shift lever is moved into P, the parking brake will be set, and the parking brake indicator light and parking brake light turn on.

Operate the shift lever with the brake pedal depressed.

Turn automatic mode off: while the vehicle is stopped, press and hold the parking brake switch until a message is shown on the multi-information display.

Operate the parking brake switch while depressing the brake pedal

Manual Mode: The parking brake can be set and released manually.

Pulling up sets the parking brake: The parking brake indicator light and parking brake light will turn on. Pull and hold the parking brake switch if an emergency occurs and it is necessary to operate the parking brake while driving.

Pressing down releases the parking brake: Operate the parking brake switch while depressing the brake pedal. Make sure that the parking brake indicator light or parking brake light turn off.


Subaru Outback 21

Electronic Parking Brake: Your vehicle is equipped with an electronic parking brake. You can apply/release the parking brake by operating the parking brake switch.

To apply: Depress the brake pedal and pull up the parking brake switch.

To release: Press the parking brake switch firmly while the ignition switch is in the “ON” position and the brake pedal is depressed.

Note: When the parking brake is applied while the ignition switch is in the “ON” position the following indicator lights illuminate. the indicator light on the parking brake switch. the electronic parking brake indicator light on the combination meter

Automatic release function by accelerator pedal: The electronic parking brake system has an automatic release function. The parking brake will be automatically released by depressing the accelerator pedal. However, the automatic release function does not operate under the following conditions:

  • Any door (other than the trunk lid or rear gate) is open.
  • The driver’s seatbelt is not fastened.

If the parking brake is automatically released, the electronic parking brake indicator light and the indicator light on the parking brake switch turn off.
